Factors Affecting Speed

The following factors affect thread speed:

  • Workpiece material & hardness
  • Type and size of thread
  • Type and size of thread mill selected
  • Method of coolant application
  • Thread finish required
  • Depth of cut to be taken
  • Rigidity of workpiece set-up
  • Machine tool size, power & rigidity
  • Safety aspects of the set-up

Use Lower Speeds Ranges for:

  • Heat treated materials
  • Exotic materials
  • Abrasive materials
  • Maximum cutter life

Use Higher Speed Ranges for:

  • Softer Materials
  • Better Finishes
  • Smaller diameter cutters
  • Frail workpieces or set-ups
  • Maximum production rates
